CKAG Artist Of The Year 2009-2010

Marilyn V. Matthews

Maroly Mathews AoY

Marilyn Matthews first visited the Central Kentucky Art Guild in November 1995 as a guest presenter on portrait painting. She had just completed studying art at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.  Two years later she studied expressive therapy at the University of Louisville.

She has worked as a graphic artist, mom and homemaker, independent teacher of drawing and painting, adult education tutor, church organist, art therapist, and artist.  Favorite materials are watercolor, watercolor crayons & pencils, oil pastel, and charcoal. Her work has evolved from being mostly representational and realistic to more impressionist and energetic.  Among the contemporary artists whom she most admires are Shirley Trevena and Charles Reid.

“In 2010 I decided to claim more time for drawing and painting, consistently. You can live a lifetime letting other things get in the way. I’m done with that,” says Matthews. “Painting makes me happy, and life is getting shorter all the time! I love that altered state that comes with slowing down, really looking at a subject, and playing with contour, color, texture, form, rhythm.”

CKAG Artist of the Year - 2008-2009

Judy C. Stice

Elizabethtown, KY

Judy Stice

Judy is a retired teacher of 30 years with B.S. and M.A. Degrees from Murray State University. She also holds a Rank I,  plus an additional 30 hours from Western Kentucky University.  As part of her undergraduate work, she completed 13 college hours of art training. Throughout much of her life, teaching and family consumed most of her time; but the desire to draw and paint was always present.  After retirement, Judy again picked up her art materials and resumed her artwalk.  As a teacher, her ultimate goal was to help students become continuous learners. As an artist, she practices the same philosophy...always a learner. She attends workshops of professional artists such as Mitch Tolle, Mary Whyte, and Joyce Washor;  and she has compiled a library of art books that will always be expanding.  Judy was the CKAG Business Exhibit Coodinator for three years and has served as Treasurer for three years. As a  juried member of the CKAG, Judy has exhibited at the  All Member Show at E.C.C.  She has also exhibited as a guest artist for the 2009 Elizabethtown Garden Tours show. After being chosen   CKAG Artist of the Year in 2009, Judy was honored with an opportunity for a public show. She presented a collection of small and miniature works at the Brown-Pusey House in June 2010.

Artist Statement:

Art  is not just about making  a pretty picture. For me, it is somewhat of a private pursuit that allows for relaxation and challenges of the mind.  It also offers a connection with wonderful people who share the same interests.  Trying to develop an art language is the most enjoyable part of the process. Instead of verbalizing, I try to capture an emotion or a feeling with a paintbrush or pencil. Accepting new challenges has always been part of my life spirit, and learning art techniques  is the perfect challenge for me at this time in my life.  People know me through my outer life as a teacher of reading, writing, and math, but few know about my love of art.  I would like to be able to share that part of myself in a way that will challenge others to pick up a paintbrush and join in the fun.  My artistic voice is not yet fully developed.  I am an artist who will never be finished speaking until my eyes are closed and my heart is still.  I place no limitations upon my abilities. It is an honor to have been  chosen as the 2010 Artist of the Year for the Central Kentucky Art Guild, and it is my hope to continue to develop my artistic skills throughout the rest of my life. Only God knows where I will go and what I will paint. I am truly looking forward to the rest of my journey.

CKAG Artist of the Year 2007-2008

Marty Hollenbach

Press Release

On Friday November 21, the Central Kentucky Artist Guild held a reception to honor Marty Hollenbach as our 2008 Artist of the Year. The reception was from 7-9 pm at the historic State Theater Complex in downtown Elizabethtown. Also showing work alongside Mrs. Hollenbach will be Mary Lou Hall and Patrick Judge, who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Guild’s Artist of the Year competition.

Marty Hollenbach began painting as a very young child at camp and at Sunday School. After high school Mrs. Hollenbach traveled to New York and studied Art, Interior Design, Flat Design, Life Drawing, and History of Art. She returned to Louisville and taught art at Chenoweth. In addition to being a member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society, Mrs. Hollenbach has shown her work in two Aqueous shows and four Aqua Venture shows. She also helped to start the Meade County Art Club. Having taught art for many years, Mrs. Hollenbach believes in taking art classes as well. Her teachers include Sara Roush, Judi Betts, Don Andrews, Margaret Martin and several other accomplished artists. “Art is a creation”, says Mrs. Hollenbach. “A lifting up of one’s spirits sharing the glories of life, always striving to be better.”

Mary Lou Hall took oil painting as a teen. However, it wouldn’t be until after her retirement from teaching and her children were nearly grown that she took the opportunity to attend UofL and take all of their art foundation classes. In 1990, she took up watercolor and later got into pastels. Mrs. Hall has won the Grand Purchase Award at the Kentucky State Fair in pastel and watercolor and last year she was chosen to paint the portraits of nine honored Kentucky women and have the portraits hang in the Kentucky State Capitol. Mrs. Hall says “To create a painting is first and foremost a pleasure. Second to that is the joy of sharing your creation with others who gain from the viewing of the art.”

Patrick Judge has been painting for over 20 years and primarily works in oil. He was inspired to paint when he saw the work of Michelangelo in a museum many years ago. Mr. Judge spent 22 years in the U.S. Army and has painted several Army murals including one at West Point in the Army/Navy Tunnel. When it comes to deciding what to paint, Mr. Judge may see something and then decide he wants to commit it to canvas. He thinks to himself, “That would make a cool painting.”

The community is welcome to come and view the works of these three talented artists.
